Project Experience
SANMAR CHAIN INTERNATIONAL PTE LTD (SCI) was formed by the key personnel from Sanmar Ltd (Russell Glen & Jarle Gamlem), Offspring International Ltd (Dave Rowley & Nigel Grainger) and Jeyco Pty Ltd (Simon Taylor) together with our China Operations Director, Dr. Michael Huangfu. The team had been working closely together for a number of years with projects taken under the name of Offspring International before it was agreed to formalize the relationship and establish Sanmar Chain International as a Singaporean registered enterprise.
Early projects were supplied with chains manufactured by Zheng Mao Group Co Ltd; the factory is
accredited by both API and CSQA with a Quality System in accordance with ISO 9001:2000. It has
full traceability of all materials from raw materials through to all products in application.
The Zheng Mao product range includes stud link and studless chains from 14mm to 152mm diameter
for all offshore applications. The products have Type Approval Certification from all major
Classification Societies up to 152mm dia in Grade 4 material.
The manufacturing facility includes 9 chain making machines, 5 continuous heat treatment plants and 3 linear test benches with calibration up to 20,000 kN. Production capacity is approximately 45,000 tonnes per annum, with the potential to increase this in line with customer demand.
Our project successes include the supply of approximately 1,400 tonnes x 5.3/4” (147mm) dia Grade RQ4 Studless Mooring Chain for the Dominion Devils Tower Spar, a combined spiral strand wire rope and chain mooring system, the deepest in the Gulf of Mexico so far and, as such, a WORLD RECORD. An important factor of this project was our ability to liaise closely, not only with the client’s project team, but also our fellow equipment suppliers to ensure correct interface with components such as shackles, wire rope sockets and chain jack/fairlead systems. The project also required split and staggered deliveries, to 3 different locations, to coincide with the overall project schedule.
All chains and fittings were certified by ABS, in addition to which, we established a very close relationship with the client’s in-house inspectors, who had full and unrestricted access to all aspects of the manufacturing facility in relation to this project.
We understand the need to consider the overall picture, rather than merely our own scope of supply in
isolation and we consider the relationship we develop with our client to be a partnership, where we
have the same goals and aspirations as far as the successful and smooth running of the contract is
concerned.
We have recently broadened our supply options by adding Jiangsu Asian Star Anchor Chain Co Ltd to our list of approved sources; as with Zheng Mao, we work closely alongside our supply sources to ensure that the quality of the chains being manufactured meets the highest project, classification and international standards. Asian Star also incorporate QA/QC systems accredited to ISO 9001:2000 and enjoy type approval from all of the major classification societies.
This means that we now have at our disposal probably the largest production capacity for the highest
quality offshore grade mooring chains in the world so that we are able to meet the most demanding
technical requirements in the shortest possible time frame.
We achieve this by incorporating the highest standards and ensuring they are implemented and
respected during the entire project process, from contract review, through manufacturing to testing,
inspection, certification, final dispatch and documentation. We have established a full time Operations
Office in Zhenjiang, China – the home city to Zheng Mao and 90 minutes from Asian Star by car,
where we employ trained personnel to oversee the day-to-day running of the project and provide site
interface between our clients and the manufacturing unit.
Our Project Reference List is growing and we can boast considerable success with both permanent
moorings and MODU/drilling applications. Permanent moorings include CALM Buoy Projects around
the world such as Thailand, India, Ecuador, Sudan, Nigeria, Libya, Indonesia, Vietnam, Qatar,Trinidad, Ghana, Chile etc, whilst we have supplied FSO and FPSO projects offshore Europe, Nigeria,
Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Angola, Australia etc.
We have also made significant inroads into the semi-submersible MODU field, with successes in
Angola, for pre-set moorings, Singapore, the UK and Norway. Please see our Project Reference list for

One of the most interesting orders we have supplied recently incorporated approx 1400 tonnes x
114mm (4.1/2”) dia Grade R4 Studless Chain for a special mooring system in Adak, Alaska. Our client
was Manson Construction Co from Seattle who installed the mooring, complete with 75 tonne
Stevshark anchors – the largest ever made – for the Boeing Sea Based Radar (SBX) Project.
We understand that logistics play an important role in the successful completion of a project and it is
important that all components are supplied in the right place, at the right time and in the right
condition. This means that we place great emphasis on the packing, handling and shipping of our
chains, using only highly qualified sub-contractors with dedicated personnel at all times while the
chain is in transit.
A dedication to quality and commitment to exceeding client aspirations are uppermost in our
philosophy when tackling any order. All members of the organization and our supply partners are
made aware of the importance of meeting each and every specification requirement or project
milestone, from the chemistry and mechanical properties of the raw material to the on-site delivery
date.
A Project Management Team is established to make the key decisions in processing the order with clear lines of responsibility and communication, both internally and in relation to all relevant external organizations.
